Dr. Comello has been working with birthing families for over 35 years. She taught local birth attendants in Guatemala, Tanzania, and the Philippines for 16 years, with the past 9 years focusing on Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Breathe. This work was the focus of research for her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (2016), which found that teaching these modules resulted in better birth outcomes. Her goal is to develop partnerships to increase access to all of these programs in Guatemala.
Over the course of her 30 trips to Guatemala, she has been greatly enriched by the Guatemalan friends she’s made and have been inspired to develop educational programs for birth attendants, especially indigenous midwives. She loves Guatemala—which she considers her second home—and is excited for what Supporting Safe Birth can bring to this wonderful place.
